See the Turn on the Tap logo in any pub, inn and hotel across Cornwall and inside you can refill a water bottle for free. The initiative is thanks to Clean Cornwall, Surfers Against Sewage and St. Austell Breweries who aim to reduce the numbers of empty plastic water bottles going into the bin, or worse, end up strewn as litter.
As a side note, the Surfers Against Sewage and Clean Cornwall websites are well worth a look and have many other actions with which you can join in.
Tackling the sale of plastic bottles is one part of the battle. What about those bottles which get sold anyway and end up in the waste stream? The Marine Conservation Society is campaigning to make Deposit Return Systems widespread in the UK. To quote their website,
“Would you like to be able to return used drinks cans and bottles, and be given some cash back for your trouble? […] After a [deposit return] scheme was introduced in the US, the number of drinks containers found on beaches there went down by over 70%.”
Why not take a look and see how you can get involved?
