Compost Action Day at FGC

Falmouth Green Centre will be holding a Compost Action Day on Saturday May 10th, from 11am – 3pm, in partnership with Cornwall Waste Action. The event is being organised as local activity for the annual Compost Awareness week, which is now in its eighth year and is celebrated throughout the UK.

The Centre, which is located behind Falmouth School, has a compost demonstration area, which is part of a European network of demonstration sites, based at community managed environmental projects.

Falmouth Green Centre has been successfully making its own compost for over 10 years and uses it to nurture and grow organically grown herbs, wild flowers and native trees. These are available to purchase directly from the centre, all proceeds from plant sales provide necessary income to support the running costs of the centre which provides horticultural volunteering opportunities.

Cornwall Waste Action Co-ordinator, Guy Doncaster says,

“A third of the average household bin can be home composted as well as your garden waste. Composting is a great way to keep waste out of landfill and stop it rotting down to potentially create harmful greenhouse gases, which are affecting climate change. We need to encourage greater participation in home composting, which is easy to learn and can deliver great results in your garden, If everyone gets involved we can all help create a greener environment for future generations”.

On Saturday there will be an opportunity to see the centre’s latest composting addition “The Green Joanna” which the centre is trialling at the moment. This method of composting is different from the traditional bin and can involve the composting of materials such as bones, dairy products, bread and cooked foods, if managed correctly.

There will also be a compost-making workshop, showing participants a method of composting using a range of waste materials, and an opportunity to make a compost bin from waste wood. Other activities during the day, including planting up containers with compost and using plants grown at the centre’s own compost.

The event will also provide visitors with a range of compost information and there will also be a competition to win compost related prizes. Free refreshments will be available.
