Electronic and Electrical Waste Recycling and Re-Use

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive (WEEE) is due to come into force on 1st July 2007.

The County Council advises that following current discussions with SITA, DEFRA and Environment Agency on the implications, recommendations will follow, and information made available to the public.

Hopefully this will eventually mean that unwanted electrical items can be returned to retailers/manufacturers, as appropriate, for recycling.

Electrical Goods Re-Use

Please note that community waste organisations like the SOFA Project (based in Pool) already take good quality electrical appliances – in addition to unwanted modern furniture and household effects – for checking and re-distribution to people on low incomes.

SOFA (Shifting Old Furniture Around) covers most of West Cornwall, including the Transition Falmouth catchment area – Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding villages – and can be contacted on 01209 719733. Website: www.sofawestcornwall.org.uk.

GOFA (Good Old Furniture Available) is a similar furniture re-use project, also accepting household electrical goods. Based in Penwith, it also covers the Kerrier district and can be contacted on 01736 369847. Website: www.gofa.org.uk.
