Transition Falmouth supports Deposit Return System campaign

Transition Falmouth has joined forces with over 30 other organisations in the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition to support the introduction of a Deposit Return System for Cornwall and the U.K., designed to reduce the huge number of bottles and cans discarded on our beaches,on our streets and in our hedgerows.

Launched recently by Surfers Against Sewage, the Message in a Bottle campaign calls for drinks bottles (plastic and glass) and cans to attract a small deposit which is repayable on return of drinks containers to local designated collection points.

Experience in other countries in Europe and further afield demonstrate that DRS is an extremely effective method of influencing behaviour, resulting in major reductions in litter caused by bottles and cans discarded “on the go”.

Readers are encouraged to support this important initiative by visiting http://messageinabottle.org.uk where they can sign a petition and find out more about the campaign, which includes writing to their Members of Parliament calling for their support
