Press Release: Rob Hopkins Talk for Transition Falmouth May 11th
Rob Hopkins, originator of Transition Towns gave a presentation at The Falmouth Beach Hotel on the 11th May. Transition Towns are a local strategy model for engaging communities in responding to the twin challenges of Climate Change and Peak Oil. The event was well attended and several key members of the community were present.
Rob Hopkins’ talk covered the background to the growing threat of fossil fuel depletion and the
effectiveness of Transition Towns and Local Energy Descent Action Plans in creating a viable low carbon future. These tools are being taken up in an increasing number of towns and cities in the UK, including here in Falmouth.
The audience asked several questions including: sustainable train provision; innovative alternative energy systems i.e. wave hub; engaging young people, local dependence on tourism and local strategic planning.
The end of cheap oil and gas means we will soon all be faced with a dramatic change in lifestyle.
Transition Falmouth is using films and talks to increase awareness of these issues, and is starting to forge partnerships with people and organisations to plan for local energy reduction to ease the change. Existing partners and local supporters include Falmouth Town Council, Falmouth Allotments Association, Falmouth Green Centre, Falmouth Friends of the Earth. Though Transition Falmouth has been active for just a few months we are very excited by the new projects starting and the enthusiasm of supporters.
Meetings are held every fortnight and the next one is in the WI Hall Webber Street Thursday 17th May 19:30 and will feature the film ‘The Power of Community’ showing how Cuba survived a massive reduction of oil imports in the early 1990’s – this will be followed by discussion.
